Parsons war als Toningenieur für Künstler wie die Beatles oder Al Stewart tätig und produzierte auch das weltberühmte Pink-Floyd-Album "The Dark Side of the Moon", bevor er 1975 mit Eric Woolfson das "Alan Parsons Project" gründete. Die Band veröffentlichte ein Jahr später ihr Debütalbum "Tales of Mystery and Imagination", welches heute Kultstatus hat.
